Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

2 bank vs. 4 bank

Post by po-po 5.0 » Tue Feb 06, 2007 10:39 am

The previous vehicle I twEEced on was an A9P equipped fox body stang. The current vehicle I'm considering twEECing on is a '00 Lightning (CUX2). Obviously my old vehicle was a 2 bank vehicle and the new one is a 4. What exactly does this mean? Does it mean that I can only have 2 tunes on the twEECer at one time as opposed to 4?

help me out with the differences.

Just FYI: A9P, (ie: Fox platform EEC-IV) is 1 bank.

Your '00 is probably 4 bank, which I think means you get only two tunes. Do you have a fairly new TwEECer? I just had a case of mine not working with my '97 Cobra (2 bank). I have one of the very first TwEECer RT's made, and it did not have enough memory to support 2 bank processors. Had to send it back and have it upgraded. Works fine now. Just something to keep in mind if you have an old TwEECer.

Directly from the "getting started.pdf" Hope this helps.

Which Firmware do I have?
The Setting Bank Mode section is only valid for units with the 00E firmware, which supports 2 or 4 banks. You
can check your board revision by performing a read or write of the TwEECer or a read of the EEC. Every time one
of these operations is performed the board rev is displayed at the bottom of the CalEdit screen.
The last 3 characters are the firmware and if they are not 00E then your board
ONLY supports Four 2 bank programs. You may send your board in for a free
firmware update and you only pay shipping both ways.
STKR - firmware upgrade
6311 Holly Canyon Court
Katy, TX 77450
Include your return shipping payment or a return airbill, etc and contact info.
Do I have a Base or RT?
The 5th Character in the board revision denotes Base or RT with a B or R respectively. The first 2 characters are
hardware revision and the next two denote the build number.
Setting Bank Configuration
Driver must be installed first -- For 99.99% of the applications the Four 2 Bank Program mode will be the
choice needed and the TwEECer is shipped this way by default, requiring no action by the user. Your TwEECer
must have the 00E firmware to have this feature; otherwise CalEdit will report this feature unavailable.
If you have a 98 or newer EECV based vehicle and need access to parameters in the two highest banks, then you
will need to select the Two 4 Bank Programs. Go to the utilities tab in CalEdit, at the bottom of the page you will
see the “Configure Banks” button with two (2) radio buttons.
*The position of this radio button does NOT indicate the current setting, but CalEdit remembers
the state of the button when the application was last exited.
This procedure is best performed with the TwEECer out of the vehicle and NOT connected to the EEC. The EEC
can store a voltage and keep the TwEECer from completely discharging power and not completing the process.
Select the radio button for your case, with the TwEECer connected to the laptop but without the switch connected,
and click the Config Banks button.
Disconnect the TwEECer from the USB cable and then click
OK. Your bank mode is now set. You can perform this
operation as many times as you want, switching from 2 to 4
bank support and back, though most will not ever use this
option and those that do only need to do it once. If the
TwEECer is installed in the vehicle, you will need to
disconnect the battery and discharge it by pressing the brake pedal several times. All power must be removed for
this operation to complete successfully.
When using the Two 4 Bank Program configuration, switch positions 1 & 3 are duplicate and 2 & 4 are duplicate.
Your two available calibration switch positions are 1 and 2.

Setting the Strategy & Bank Count
The Strategy selects the definitions needed for your particular processor family. Select the strategy that matches
your calibration and set the number of banks for your strategy/processor. Once these are set, they will be used by
default. If you change to different calibration, you will need to set these accordingly.
This Bank count will tell CalEdit how many banks to read and write from/to the TwEECer and EEC. If your
processor has 4 banks, you will only need to use two (2) banks. Normally it is best to read only as many banks as
you are going to write as CalEdit will NOT display any calibration variables that are outside of the range of number
of banks you have loaded.

What I don't understand is why this info even requires user intervention. Why can't this be a part of the strategy file CalEdit uses? When would a 4-bank capible processor ever be configured for 2-bank in CalEdit?

Granted all of my twEECing experience was on a fox, but my understanding is that its possible that the parameters stored in the "upper" banks may not be necessary.

The EEC-V processors store a lot of information that has absolutely nothing to do with tuning a vehicle. Things that come to mind are the PATS info as well as the odometer mileage. If all of that was stored in banks 3 and 4, you could completely tune a vehicle without ever writing to those banks.

Now that makes more sense, however what is determining when the EEC is accessing onboard ROM and when it is accessing the tuning device? It was my understanding that when you enable/disable ROM, it's disabling all of ROM putting the tuning device in complete control. Or are there separate lines to control which sections of ROM are disabled (i.e. it is possible to disable Banks 1&2 while leaving 3&4 as they are in the EEC)?

I have a feeling this is a sailorbob question. :)

Some of the tuners will disable the internal ROM only when a specific address is requested. For example the A9x series they let the internal ROM take advantage of all address below 2000H and the external memory for all address above 2000H.

So if they (tweecer , moates) are address picking it may be what is going on, but in my opinion they might as well disable internal ROM for good and soley work off of the external. Memory is cheap today, and therefor reading all 4 banks and storing it is not a big deal.

So they are literally turning that "Disable ROM" line on and off at high speeds as they determine what address is being requested?

Yes, I can not speak for all of the different tuner boards but this is what I have seen in the past.

I think most chip adapters permanently tie pin 16 (EPROMDISABLE) of the J3 connector to ground which disables the internal rom and avoids any bus conflicts. This also explains why they have a copy of all of the eec's rom in the chip and not just the calibration data (at least that's the case in the commercial stuff I've seen).

I think early chip adapters did only address part of the ecu's rom as Clint has said but I think this was dropped on later designs as it added unnecessary complexity.

EDIT: Added 2nd paragraph

So does the twEECer do this? Which would mean that you absolutely have to have all 4 banks stored to the twEECer.

I think what he's saying is that's the way custom chips work. That would explain why 64k BINs are used to burn custom chips, but only 56k BINs are used to download a TwEECer...because TwEECer does NOT do this...it turns the EPROMDISABLE on and off as needed.

Did I get that right?

I think the Tweecer ties pin 16 permanently too. I believe the switching between 4 no. 2 bank roms or 2 no. 4 bank roms is simply down to it not having enough internal memory to support 4 no. 4 bank roms.

The 56k vs 64k download doesn't affect the Tweecer because the software is dedicated to it and the user doesn't have to worry about file offsets when burning a chip.

My 98 Cobra with AOL3 has 4 banks and I have operated the car in 4 - 2 bank mode and 2 - 4 bank mode and the car ran fine.
4 - 2 bank mode allows 4 custom tunes plus the stock tune.
2 - 4 bank mode will only allow 2 custom tunes plus the stock tune. Switch position 1 & 3 will hold 1 custom tune and positions 2 & 4 will hold the 2nd tune.
It is my understanding that 4 banks is necessary due to all of the programing that had to be added for return less fuel systems in 99+ cars.

98 Cobra's with AOL3 are return fuel system cars but have been fitted with a larger 2 speed fuel pump than 96 or 97 Cobra's. Additional programming was necessary to automatically switch between slow and fast pump speed.

In summery I program in 4 - 2 bank mode whenever I tune, even though my PCM uses 4 banks. If your stll not comfortable try dropping MG an e-mail and ask him.

That makes perfect sense as long as no engine tuning data is put into the other banks that would force you into needing 2-4bank tunes.

However, I'm still a little confused how the TwEECer gets away with only housing 2 of the 4 banks without turning the EEPROMDISABLE line on and off as it hears that the EEC needs info from the banks that the TwEECer isn't managing when operating in a 4-2bank mode.

Maybe the Tweecer is being a bit smart here and using the state of the BS0 and BS3 (bank select) lines to decide whether to hold the EPROMDISABLE line low.

I remember when I first got TwEECer I was asked for number of banks. I knew enough to know that it was a question about memory - but whose? TwEECer on board memory? EEC memory? And how the hell would I know no matter what the answer to the first question is? This thread has explained it after all this time. Somehow I figured out the answer was "1 Bank" for our '94 and just quit worrying about it. Wrote it off as another one of those things I might figure out someday. Maybe it was in the documentation and I just missed it. Oh well, thanks for the explanations guys.

I wonder if some of the goofy entries you see in a CalCon log are a result of turning the EPROMDISABLE line on and off on the fly like that?

Hmmm this could also be the reason that we see some big differences between running a moatees chip and the tweecer. Interesting topic, it woudl be nice if we could get a definate answer on this.
