Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

Injectors again

Post by Cantedvalve » Tue May 20, 2008 6:23 pm

Okay, so I ordered some injector bungs off ebay. Says they work wiuth "standard Bosch" injectors. I have a set of stock ford injectors I planned to use for mock-up. Are these not Bosh style?

Well then I'm hosed, cause they wont fit the bungs. Not a huge deal... I tried to get a deal on bungs and it didnt work. Lesson learned.

What kind of intake are you drilling to get injectors into?

Ford are Bosch injectors - isn't that what you wanted to hear - or did you ask a negative question?

It is a carb intake. Gonna drill and weld in bungs for the injectors to each runner.

Stock Ford injectors LOOK to be EV6? They look just like the EV6 in the FRPP catalog. Are EV1 and EV6 intended to be interchangeable?

No. EV1 is what was used up to about 95. In 96, EV6 was more prevolent. There is some overlap from vehicle to vehicle. The most distinctive difference between them is the connector. If you are using a Mustang harness from 89-93, then you'll need EV1 injectors OR EV6 with converter adapters OR solder on EV6 connectors to your injector harness.

I've heard the EV6 injectors are actually a good bit better with improved spray pattern characteristics as compared to EV1, but I don't know that for sure.

Okay, so what are these yellow injectors I have? Body style looks EV6... plug style looks EV1.

Those look like the Explorer injectors that are EV6, but have EV1 injector connections...like what's on my motor.
Image

I should've mentioned that there were hybrid injectors of this type especially since I have them myself. Here's another pic of various injectors that also seems to confirm this:
Image
Notice the Navigator ran EV6 24lb injectors stock that have the EV1 connector. And that 17lb injector at the top is obviously EV6, but with an EV1 connector.

In 99, Ford quit including these on Explorer V8s and instead installed 100% EV6 17lb (ivory) injectors. Since the Explorer motor wasn't maxing out the 19s, I guess they found they could get a better spray pattern from a smaller injector??? Or maybe it had to do with converting to a return-less fuel system the same year.

These oddball injectors seem to have sizes other than 17, 19, and 24. This chart shows that the EV6 with EV1 connectors were also available in 30s and 34s from FMS:
Image

But from what I understand, the injector bung is very similar in diameter to the hole the older injectors used. Although according to the very blurry numbers above, it appears the EV6s were just a tad smaller, but not by much. I've heard of countless people using the EV1 injectors in Explorer lower intakes that were stock with those EV6 injectors.

The vendor contacted me back last night - great guy. He sent me ohotos of EV1 injectors installed in his bungs... which is GOOD, since that is what I was planning on running.

They look like mini-bazookas!

For beer, I liked Kirin, but they sold out. Maybe a good old-fashioned Guinness stout in those special foaming cans.

I wish I had one of those to test fit. I wonder if those are stock to any particular application (that body style). Those are DIFFERENT than the Explorer ones I photographed earlier I think... hard to tell since they are black.

I saw them for sale on eBay for one at a time. So if you wanted to buy just 1, you could. Then if it worked, buy 7 more later. The catch is, there are not that many places that actually sell them individually like that. So to buy just 7 later might cost more than finding a place to just buy 8.

But if you wanted to test-fit them that way, that looks like an option.

They LOOK like they would fit. The problem with the Explorer ones was that they werent perfectly round, so the injector body wouldnt go down in the bung as far as it needed to. The actual orifice where the o-ring fits was the right size. I suppose I could cut down the bung, but that isnt really what I wanted to do.

Maybe I can get this guy to send me one, and if it fits, buy the set? Cant hurt to ask!

Post up a pic of that bung.

I'm curious as to what the benefit of the bung is vs just drilling out the intake to accept the injector directly? I've seen people modify old Ford FE aluminum intakes to be injected and that's all they did. But since I've never done this kind of work, I thought I'd ask just to see what the benefit is.

I'll have to find the pic of the guy a few months ago that is doing that conversion to an FE.

I cant imagine just drilling a carb intake for injectors... I woudlnt think the intake runners were thick enough.

That is exactly what I am going to do, with the exception of using a carb-style throttle body instead of an elbow with a EFI style throttle body.

Screw in bungs... that's something new.

Thanks! I have them linked now.

I wonder if the short Siemens would work instead of the long Siemens? They look identical... just shorter. I could lower the fuel rails... make it more stealthy...

or not :)
