Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

TwEECer - 351w - A9L initial tune

Post by madramper » Sat Oct 04, 2008 7:41 pm

I have a 351w in my truck running off of an A9L. The meter is a C&L 76mm with 30# injectors. I have no emissions crap on the truck. These are the changes I plan on making. Is there anything else you would suggest?

Canister Purge Minimum RPM 9999
Canister Purge OL Enable 2
Checksum Base Address 0
EGR System Type 2
Engine Displacement 351
Idle in Gear 800
Idle in Neutral 800
Injector Slope High 30.5
Injector Slope Low 38.5
Thermactor Air Control Logic Enabled 0

Do I need breakpoint and minimum pulsewidth for injectors?

I have the MAF transfer in excel format that I got from VRIstang's website. How do I enter that? I know where it is, but it shows the first four X/Y axis as 0/13.629. Do I keep them as 0?

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I need to pay more attention when reading....

If you don't need all the cells in the MAF Transfer, then yes, leave them blank (or as they are now at 0).

Does the vehicle run now without a tune?

Yes it runs, but I haven't left the garage with it yet. I have a few things I need to address before I can drive it, but that should be this weekend. I was having a problem with an O2 sensor not reading that I may have a fix for. I am also idling at 18:1 AFR, but I think I figured that one out... maybe. This is my first experience with mass air and I have a major no-no. I have open valve cover breathers and the PCV valve is hooked up. I am hoping that when I pull the vacuum hose from the PCV that it will fix that.

The only thing I have in the tune so far is removing the EGR and raising the idle rpm. I also saved the payload so I could datalog while it is running.

If you have a heavy overlap cam or a wide duration, you could get WB readings in the 18s just because of air short-cycling through the engine. Since there is no smog pump, it wouldn't be that.

So what cam are you running? If it's stock, it isn't likely to be a cam issue running you lean at idle. But I thought I'd ask...

That is basically a vac leak... unmetered air...
You will want to fix that.

Also, check for Diagnostic codes...
Tuning while the ecu is in a alternate strategy will just piss you off.

Just guessing as I don't have any personal experience with that cam, but it shouldn't be causing you any issues.

The vaccum leak is plugged now. The cam is afairly large, but I don't think its big enough to cause a problem. I am still pulling 12" of vacuum after plugging the PCV. I'll get some more testing done and get back to you.

I entered the MAF transfer and saved the file. I know CalEdit changes the numbers a little bit, but when I opened the file again, they were no where near what I had set them to. Some of the changes weren't even linear. Like .599v came before .500. What am I doing wrong? Would it be possible for someone to save the MAF transfer and email it to me so I can load it? I am using a C&L 76mm with the purple tube - 30# injectors.

I was going to buy Binary Editor, but I'm not even sure if I am going to stick with the TwEECer. I have been thinking of just having someone tune it for me that knows what they are doing.

CalEdit can be funny with some stuff like that...

Make sure you hit 'Enter' after filling in the value in each cell.
When I used CalEdit I would enter the values, then move over to another tab (Scalars will work), I would click on one of the cells there but not change anything, then go back to the Functions tab to verify that the values I just entered are still correct.

Let us know how that works... This shouldn't be so discouraging that your ready to give up... not yet anyway

No, not really discouraged. I have tuned with the tweecer years ago on speed density. I just have not messed with mass air and I really don't have time to learn. I haven't really decided one way or the other. At this point, I don't really have the money to get it tuned yet, so I guess I will stick with it at least for a little while. I need to buy a set of drag radials and get this thing ready for SSOTN on Nov. 15th. I'm hoping it will run good. It should with all of the money I dumped into it this year!!!!

What is it that you exactly want to do with this thing? What would you like to do with this truck?

It is 95% street. I only go to the track a couple of times a year. I want it to run low 13's in the 1/4 when I do go to the track. Other than that, I just want it to run good.

I spoke to a local tuner today and he is willing to tune my truck with the tweecer. He has a pretty good reputation and was a top Pro 5.0 racer some years back. So I'll let him tune it and that will give me time to learn the tweecer on my own.

Yeah - the whole reason why I got into this tuning stuff of my own was because the local guy was SO bad... Charged me $800 and didn't do anything right. If you want it done right.. then....

I got into the tweecer because no one would tune the Lightning speed density. So with the my previous trucks, I was on my own. For the new truck, I figured I would just keep doing it with the mass air, but it is very different from the stock Lightning computer. I want to race in a couple of weeks and definately don't have time to learn it before then.

The tuner's name is Craig Radovich. He owns Radical Racing about a mile from Atco Raceway in NJ. Its about an hour or so from my house.

Craig at Radical Racing took care of me! I was there to navagate through the software and he made the changes needed. Without adding timing, it made 303 rwhp and 380 rwtq. I am heading to the track on Saturday to see what she'll run.
