Unable to read/write after 1.20B3 install

Post by Pat Olsen » Tue Aug 12, 2003 12:46 pm

OK, I just got my car back on the road a couple days ago. When I picked it up I was definitely able to write to the Tweecer. It wouldn't idle initially, but I changed the idle, loaded that into switch position 2, and voila! the idle was fixed. If I changed to switch position 1 or 3 while idling the car would die immediately. So I could definitely write to the Tweecer, but the one time I tried to read the Tweecer (just kinda messing around) it was "unable to open Tweecer". This was in the same general time period as when I was writing to it, but there's a chance I had shut the car down and had the ignition OFF, I don't remember.

Anyway, fast forward a couple days. Yesterday I downloaded and installed 1.20B3 and just went out to play with the car. "Unable to open Tweecer". :( Tried cycling the key a couple times, tried different orders of plugging in USB, opening CalEdit, turning on key, no dice. So, I came in here and read a bit, saw one guy fixed this with a reboot. Ahhh! I never rebooted after installing 1.20B3! Went out, rebooted the laptop, tried again - still "unable to open Tweecer". What am I doing wrong?

This is an A9L, computer is a Toshiba laptop running Win98. Thoughts? Suggestions? Please?

YBSOSLO referred me to http://tweecer.oplnk.net/viewtopic.php? ... ght=driver via email. I checked my drivers in the Device Manager and the "Unknown Device" was disabled. I enabled it, and was prompted to reboot. Did that, and opened Device Manager again - this time it showed that the driver was not up to date, so I went to "Update Driver" and had it look in the STKR/driver folder. Not too surprisingly, it said that the best driver was already installed, but it still doesn't work.

I guess I'll try the complete un-install/re-install procedure and see what happends. :(

Pat, don't worry about uninstalling the software. Just go into device manager and uninstall the device. Then make sure it is disconnected and reboot, after the computer comes back up connect the TwEECer. After that check device mangler and see if it installed correctly.
Thanks,

OK, this thing is driving me to drink. I went to Add/Remove Programs and un-installed the BDE and CalCon/CalEdit. I then saw a "Tweecer USB Drivers" in the list of programs and un-installed that, too. I figured that was what Raymond meant by "uninstall the device", because when I went to Device Manager the "Unknown Device" wasn't even shown.

So, as I un-install the Tweecer USB Drivers I get a pop-up window called FTD2XX.DLL Uninstall that says:
Deleting registry entries...

Deleting files...

Uninstall complete, press Finish to exit.

I press Finish to exit, but Tweecer USB Drivers doesn't disappear from the list of programs to Add/Remove (the other programs disappeared from the list once they were un-installed). Hmmm...

So, I re-install everything, plug the USB into the computer, turn the key to ON, the computer kinda clicks and hums like sumthin' is going on, but there's no prompt saying "There's an unknown device plugged into the USB port!" So I select "Add Hardware" and it comes up with Unknown Device, which it says is already installed but has a problem - leading me back to the "Update Driver" option which doesn't do anything.

Then, just to add insult to injury, I decide to open CalEdit to see if anything has changed - maybe it will read it now. Instead, CalEdit won't open and I get a "Unable to find a .DLL file, FTD2XX.DLL. blah blah blah." WTF?!

With 1.19 I couldn't datalog a selectable payload, but at least I was able to use this damn thing!!!

Pat I should have been more clear. I mean just uninstall the device in device manager. To do that right click on it and choose remove then reboot and after the OS is up plug the TwEECer in and let it find the hardware.

It's important to reboot after removing the device then wait until the OS fully loads before pluging the TwEECer in.
Thanks,

Thanks, Raymond, I'll give that a shot tomorrow since it's 1am now. :) I re-installed CalCon/Edit and BDE and the "unable to find .DLL file" thing went away, so that's good. Tomorrow I'll play with the drivers and see if I can make it work.

:? Still no dice. Started up computer, hooked up USB, turned key to ON, went to Device Manager and "Removed" the Unknown Device. Rebooted the computer (disconnected the USB before doing so), waited for it to come all the way up into Win98, little hourglass went away, hard drive noises stopped. Plugged in USB, turned key to ON, computer detected the Unknown Device, installed the driver without me having to prompt it where to look, and it was all happy. Opened CalEdit, tried to read and write and received the same ol' "unable to open Tweecer".

This is killin' me! The one thing I haven't tried is going back to re-install the old versions of CalEdit/CalCon - I won't have the selectable datalogging but at least I'll be able to do something!

Any other suggestions? I just don't understand why installing new software now makes the hardware not want to play. :?

Pat Olsen

Edit: Just un-installed 1.20B3 and re-installed RTSetup (1.19) and the RTUpdate, both of which I still had saved on the hard drive. Went out and was able to write to the Tweecer on the first try. However, I still get nothing on CalCon. I have "data logging" selected in the profile I've written to the Tweecer, but I don't know if I even need to have that in order to just see the digital dashboard function. I get absolutely nothing - no "Real Time Data" light, no movement on any of the gauges, nuthin'.

Is there any sort of problem that would allow me to write to Tweecer but not read? I didn't try to read it this time (after re-installing the older software), I just tried to write. I guess I can go back out and try reading, too.

Did you select "FOX" from the side bar drop down menu on CalCon? It's right below the 'Log to file' check box. If I remember correctly, it doesnt show up anything with a fresh install. Let me know.

With the current version of CalCon I have installed it's not a drop-down menu, the four options are listed on the right side of the display. And yes, Fox is selected. I tried selecting the others just for shits and giggles, but that did nothing.

Pat, you didn't by chance have both CalCon and CalEdit open when you tried to read/write to the TwEECer with the new software did you ?

Nope, I never even tried opening CalCon to see what it would do. I only opened CalEdit.

Hey Pat,

Is this Win98 or Win98SE??? Win98 does NOT play well with USB, even with the service pak. We specifically say that we support win98SE (Second Edition), check to see which version you have.

To be honest, Mike, I don't know. I bought the laptop used and I'm not sure where to look to figure out if I have Win98 or Win98SE. When I start up and shut down the computer, the Windows screen that flashes up briefly just says "Windows 98". When I go to Start - Help the window that opens up says "Windows 98 Second Edition". The Start Menu itself just says "Windows 98" when I click on Start. Where should I look to figure out what I've got?

Other than the 98SE vs 98, are there any other thoughts you have, Mike?

Thanks,
Pat

OK, it is Win98SE, so I have the "good" version.

Could a bad connection to the EEC cause me to be able to write to the Tweecer but not read it? I haven't tried anything else in the past couple days because I don't know what to do.

Mike? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Pat

I went through a very similar problem with mine a little while back. The only difference is I don't remember if I ever reloaded 1.19 and tested it. I went through the cycle of uninstalling everything, including Windows once, and reinstalling everything several times. I eventually just had to send the TwEECer back to Mike. I don't know what he did to fix it, but it works flawlessly now. I know it sucks to part with, but it may be your only option. The fact that it appears to have some functionality in 1.19 is perplexing though.

Well give Desmo a cigar, Pat you purchased one from our very first batch of 75 units where Innova did not install a jumper on the PCB. Without this jumper, the USB & EEC fight over who will power the tweecer and you get the problem that your having. Ship it back to the address on the website and we will fix it up and get it back to you.
