Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

Some Tuning Questions, 24s,LMAF,8LD/A9L

Post by FoxRodder » Sun Nov 15, 2009 4:48 pm

Hey for anyone that doesnt mind lending a hand I'd appreciate any help I can get. I've already done a little bit of searching and playing but heres my deal:

I just got my motor together and running with AFR165s, Exploder intake/tmossed lower, stock cam, 24# injectors, and at the moment C&L 76mm letting it run. Well in the past I didnt do my homework or else I never would have gotten the C&L but I want it right. I took a while trying to figure which way to go but I decided on the QH and it should be here tomorrow.

I will be running a 90mm Lightning MAF, the 24s, and at the moment I have in the car I believe an 8LD computer which is a california 1988 maf computer and in the closet I've got two A9Ls I pulled out of 89 cars at the junkyard. I want to try and tune it up first using the 8LD to learn on and then if I get that right I'll put in an A9L and get a tune done for that as a backup for later if I ever need. If I can sort things out I'll get one of those Jaybird deals and burn a moates chip with the final tune.

So anyways, I was playing with my unregistered BE trying to learn the ropes before I registered it. I downloaded bins from EEC Analyzer site for the 8LD, A9L, A9M, and A9P to get some comparisons on parameters. I went through the giant list a few times and kept finding lots of parameters that seemed way off in the A9L bin. The 8LD had 19/26# on the injectors and the A9L had some rediculous number that made no sense. So I'm wondering if theres a source for known correct bin files to download since I can't use QH to download from my EEC. I'm also looking for info for setting my injector high/lo slopes etc for the 24s and a good MAF transfer for the Lightning 90mm.

those bins from the eec analyzer site are correct, verify your using the correct def file to view them

do you have a baseline tune? if so post the bin

While there are better MAFs than the C&L, there's nothing wrong with them when setup and dialed in. I wouldn't go changing the MAF just because you think the C&L is junk, but haven't actually given it a chance. The only thing I can say about your choice is that the 73mm MAF would probably have been a better fit for your combo. Now if you had the AFRs and ported upper accompanied by a 347 stroker kit in the bottom end and a big fat cam, the 76mm would probably be the better choice...but the 76 isn't so oversized that it can't be made to work. It's just not ideal...depending on the tube in the 76mm, it may be more ideal than the LMAF to tell you the truth.

The 8LD follows the GUFA strategy. A9P follows GUF1. And A9L follows GUFB. You cannot load them up and directly compare them to each other since they follow different strategies. Now you CAN load an 8LD and compare it to an A9S since both are GUFA.

Rest assured the BIN files on the EEC Analyzer website are all good. You just have to use them in the right way.

Start tuning with the GUFB/X3Z (93 Cobra) tune which comes from the factory with 24s. As for the MAF curve, you can find that in EEC Analyzer. Using the QH, you should be able to run an X3Z-based tune on your 8LD or just use one of your GUFB/A9L EECs...whatever makes you happier. But once you get to running the tune, you'll want to run the datalog through EEC Analyzer to fine-tune the Injector Slopes. I'm not fully convinced the slope values the X3Z uses are right. But I can't say that for sure without a datalog from a stock 93 Cobra of which nobody seems to have anymore...at least not on this site.

I may have got some of my values messed up from not loading GUFB def for an A9L bin so I'll have to try again and see what I get. What looks to be an annoyance is that I cannot look at the GUFA bins side by side with the GUFB bins if I have to keep changing the defs?

I've been driving around with my C&L for last month or so (Also before teardown with 19# tube) because I didnt have any other option short of putting 19s in and using a factory air meter. I have not really tested the power or anything though as I wanted to try and set it up more properly in the computer before thrashing it. My beef with the C&L or any other "calibrated" meter is the far off load values giving wrong timing advance. It may be possible to tune the C&L curve but I've seen other threads saying its hit and miss and not reccommended. I'm going to try my best with LMAF first and if it doesnt work out I've still got the C&L option.

I've got my 8LD with QH hooked in sitting in front of me on my desk and it seems BE recognized it ok. I was able to delete the jibberish info that was left in the slots. I'm waiting for my registration codes though so I can't upload a tune until I get them. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get them.

First thing I'm going to throw in a basic 8LD tune and probably just turn off thermactor and canister purge. Then I want to set the injectors although I'm still doing my homework on the high/lo slope deal. The X3Z does the 24 number for both where the others with 19s show a 19 high and a 26 low.

Just came across some info you posted in this thread as well: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15602&p=77948&hilit ... ope#p77948

Kinda goes over some of my points without you saying it all over

So much to learn, it never seems to end.

I feel your pain and have asked that this be something BE can allow. But it's evidently not a trivial thing to add. The closest option at this time is to launch 2 instances of BE, one with a GUFA tune and the other with a GUFB tune.

I wasn't suggesting that you keep the EEC believing you have the 19lb injectors and stock MAF curve while you use larger injectors and that 76mm MAF. Any time you have the ability to tune the EEC, the recommended thing to do is put in the MAF's curve and actual Injector parameters so that Load gets calculated correctly.

Again, regardless of whatever slope values you use, I recommend you use EEC Analyzer to help you find better slope/bp values. But that's just me. There are other camps of thought...

Yea I know what you meant as far as the C&L tuning. I just figure since its a half *** compromise to begin with, the LMAF being a highly R&D solution good for factory would be a better solution. The housing and electronics on the LMAF are designed to work together. Thats my thinking there.

I'll be trying the EEC analyzer for the injectors and Maf stuff as you suggested. Just need my codes so I can start playing!

I have not hooked this up to the car yet because I'm trying to make some progress before going back and forth with my laptop to the garage. Still need to solder in my late model MAF connector too.

I took my 8LD tune, and I added an LMAF transfer, and I input the X3Z injectors hi=lo slopes for the 24s, breakpoint(5.0001), and offset. Anything else I should be looking at?

I'm trying to read so I can understand the difference of the hi=lo strategy versus the two different numbers strategy.
