Kinda hard to get caught speeding if you just don't speed.

just something to consider...

Some speed limits are just ridiculous. We've got some roads that can easily handle 55MPH traffic, and the posted limit is 40. If speeding is dangerous, I tend to agree with you, but when going faster is relatively safe to do, I got no problem easing past the posted limit to a more reasonable limit. Of course I accept that at times I may have to talk to the local uniformed tax collector for doing so...

No, we all know the tree makes a sound. But unless it falls on something/someone we care about, the sound it makes is irrelevant. Same with speeding...people are going to speed. But it's not important unless a cop is around.

If you really didn't want people to speed, remove the seat belts from all cars and mount a machete on the steering wheel pointing at the driver's throat. Nobody would go over 3 MPH.

I can't take credit for that quote. That was actually a line from House MD. But I thought it appropriate for the topic so I borrowed...

I do disagree...
It's a nice fall evening and you are cruising along a winding back road and figure "why not have some fun... there aren't any cops around"
You're doing 10-30 over the posted limit, and having a great time... until you make a corner and there is a young man crossing the road...

No BS, this happened out here a short time ago.
A guy is dead, and the car moving a little slower could have made the difference of him getting out of the way or the car being able to change course in time.

The reason for speed limits has little to do with the capabilities of your tricked out car.
It has more to do with the capabilities of a human driver and the surrounding environment.

Just my thoughts... wish you all the best

I'm sure a cop got involved.

vristang, It *could* have made a difference, but also may not have. There is also some blame to be laid on the person crossing the road. There's a good chance he heard the vehicle coming, especially if the guy was really cranking it up on the country road. Anytime you're on foot, especially in a low visibility area, you have to be extra careful.

I'm not excusing the guy for runnin fast down a country road, that's part of the risk you take when you choose to do that. But you can't say that just the speeding caused it.

That being said, things like that are the reason I keep my speed on the track now.

Speeding through low visibility areas are dangerous and I don't classify as "speeding" but rather wreckless. When I want to speed, it's on highways that people should know better than to be walking on...and that can handle the speeds I'm trying to tavel such as the Interstate. Some places on I-75 in downtown Atlanta are actually posted at 45MPH. 45!!!! They used to be 55. And 99% of downtown I-75 is plenty wide enough and capable of running 65-70 on. Granted in the mornings and afternoons, it's just a parking lot that crawls from 0-45. But at off-peak times like the weekends or at night, it makes no sense to have posted speed limits that low unless it is for revenue generation, not because it is actually safer.

Another gripe of mine is I-285 being posted at 55. People fly on 285 all the time. And in fact, some college students proved that going the posted speed limit is actually dangerous. Check it out:
A Meditation On the Speed Limit

This was just awesome...
