That must have sucked, looked like a pretty fresh motor.

I can't speak for that motor but I have seen two locally break the block in a similar fashion. First one was making around 500hp with an idiot tuner. That one broke within a month of being put together. Second one was making about 600hp and lasted for about 4 years before finally cracking the main webs out of it. Both were naturally aspirated deals.

That's one thing that worries me about tuning and never doin it before. What can a stock block take for rwhp?

So by reading up from the link under say 500 rwhp should be safe I assume.

we have some guys making 600+ on stock blocks, one guy sprays a 250 shot out the hole, he's got over 50x 9 sec passes on an engine we built the week before katrina and hasn't had a problem with it YET, and the best part is he's carbed with the STOCK T5, he's even got the STOCK CAM in it advanced 2 degrees, he shifts it at 4,500

rev's is what kills these blocks, keep the rev's down and it'll prolong the inevitable

I think he's got a total of $5,000 invested and that includes the cost of the car

We had a race engine that we ran for 6-7 years, 406ci chevy, that used a stock 70's chevy truck block. it had 4 bolt mains installed, and punch out .020 over i believe. Other than that was stock, pushing about 650hp. Rebuilt every year, put probably 20-30 nights per year on it.

Had no problems until we switched classes. went from an 8" tire class to a 14". It's amazing how much stress traction will add to an engine. Ran almost a whole year in the new class, before it snapped the crank and broke the front of the block out. Wish I had some pictures of it; got one of the pistons/mangled rods sitting on my cabinet at home.

yeah traction is an animal of a different color

my uncle has a 350 chevy from a 75 truck, with iron heads and nitrous he's runs consistent 10.50's and when i say consistent i mean dead consistent, doesn't matter if its 60 degree or 90 degree weather it still puts down 10.50's, thats with the timing locked at 40 and i think retarded 4 degrees with the bottle

Is it true that a 69-70 302 block is stronger then the 86-93 blocks.

Yes, the 5.0 blocks were put on a strict diet. Supposedly the best readily available stock blocks for strength are the Mexican blocks from the mid-'70s(?). But they won't support stock roller hydraulic lifters, so you'd have to go with a retrofit lifter kit or flat tappets.

Im running a 69 block and found out when assembling it that stock roller lifters wouldn't work and had to go to link bar style roller lifter.
