stock tune destroys transmissions?

Post by decipha » Mon Dec 27, 2010 8:32 pm

vehicle in question is my moms 99 v6 4.0L ohv explorer with a 5r55e trans

she's got 130k miles on the clock and the ecu has the trans slipping to no end, its no wonder why the explorer's eat transmissions its because its programmed to from the factory

anyway, i just upped my shift pressure by 600%
yeah thats right, 6-0-0-% as in multiply by 6x

lets just say she shifts now

make sure you buckle up

couldn't lean her out as she was already lean :) i did richen her just a tad down low though
added an ass load of timing during part throttle, that woke her up pretty nicely even on 83 octane
i also leaned the piss out of her in closed loop, should be good for a few mpgs

but anyone with an explorer or a 5r55e transmission, if you haven't already, i highly recommend you get the ecu 'fixed', im pretty confident that this transmission will have a prolonged life, its showing its signs of neglect but she'll last much longer now

just thought i'd share

Same on the diesels, the 99-03 used to slide them in, make them hit hard, they were indestructible.

Might be OK for the winter, but before it gets warm, you better get a look at the fluid flow diagram for that transmission. Many of the newer ones only cool the fluid that the line pressure regulator bypasses. So upping the line pressure MIGHT have the side effect of greatly reducing the fluid cooling. I don't know about your transmission, but I've seen that happen on 2003 or so Sable.

I am unsure if he is saying it has steady state slip or just has a crappy mushy slipping shift. I think he is talking about shifts and if he just upped the tv adder for the specific shifts then I don't see how it will affect trans cooling.

yeah i just changed the shift pressure, truncation and modulation is still stock

I wasn't sure what you'd done, but if you only changed it during shifts, I don't believe there would be a cooling issue. If you'd maxed out the static line pressure, then some transmissions would divert lots of fluid from the cooler.

I'm new, i registered as dburr(dewayne burr)
my project is a 84 broncko 11, 97 4.0 pushrod, 5r55, no donnor (the ingine and trans was pulled off the shelf out of the wrecking yard).
I'v spent about a year getting pretty good at makeing the wireing harnesses.
i'v got two pcm's; 97 LEZ1 and 99 RKJ1. I don't have any bin refference.
unless i have made a mistake both pcm's are out of explorers that ran the push rod 4.0 and 5r55.

i'v studied the wireing diagrams alot and will likely run the original dash and guages (although inconpatible) i expect to handle them apart from the other.

i will be calling either moates or tweccer in a few days; iwill pobably go with moates. Moates seems more like the step program that will put up with a begginer. I hope to get throug this (programing the pcm) as painless as possible for myself and those that might try to help

my question is what equipment do i need? i expect that i should spend 400.00 and go with the moates BE.

Contact the Adam (username Popsracing) and make sure that those EECs have definition support. Since those are not exactly popular EECs for tuning, don't expect the support for those EECs to be free. It'll likely cost you a little. But see what he says.
