i would look for a 98-01 5.0 v8 explorer since it has the 4r70w instead of the 5r55e that the v6 comes with, which means the trans lasts

exhaust and tune... done

I didn't even ever notice that may parents '98 was a 5spd auto. It should be though since it is a SOHC. It has over 160k miles though and going great still. I am getting from them and doing some work on it, I need something with more room vs. my 96 F150.

I had a '02 Mountaineer with the 4.6 and the towing package and that was a nice vehicle. It had the 3.73 gears, traction lok, etc. It was quick for a big vehicle. But the tranny acted up once in awhile so I sold it.

yeah the v6 explorer has the 5r55e trans, its stupid ridiculous how slow heny made them shift, my moms 99 was programmed to slip so bad that you can take off the converter would flash 2700rpms and it would STAY there until the converter locked up in 5th

that is why they fail, they are programmed to, i ALWAYS kick the epc pressure up to minimal of 40 during a shift

the 98 may be pcaf4, i think the pcaf5 strategy should work if you have a bin, you'll need to copy the vid block and change it to pcaf5 you should be good to go, let me know when/if you go that route and i'll send you my moms tune
