using a 4.6 ecu and harness on a 351w?
my main goal is to have a 351w that is obd ii compliant. would it be possible to use the ecu and harness from a 4.6 out of a mustang or something like that? or is it easier to use the ecu and harness from a 5.0 explorer? the car the 351 is going into is going to be manual. im starting out with the bare f4te block so what sensors would i need as well. another option i was thinking about is finding a 96 or 97 f250-f350 with the 5.8 and using everything off of it.

From your previous thread, the sticking point isn't running a 4.6L or 5.0L EEC on the 351w. It's that you didn't want to go the EDIS (coil pack) route and thus are trying to maintain a TFI distributor on the 351w while also running an OBD-II compliant EEC. That's the killer combination that I'm not sure there's a Ford solution for.
If there is, I'm interested in what that year/make vehicle is too.

1996 F150 5.8L was OBD2 and had a distributor/TFI ignition system.

If I have to run coil packs I can do it.

What strategy and EEC did they use? And is it EEC-IV or EEC-V?

No idea on strategy. It has a 104 pin connector so has to be EEC-V

That's getting close!
Now the next big question is, is it MAF or SD-based?
Looking at Google-images of "1996 F150 engines", it looks like it just might be MAF which means we have a winner!

yea those trucks should be maf. so thats probably my best option? now just gotta find a 96 parts truck
Re: using a 4.6 ecu and harness on a 351w?
The other question is what does OBD2 compliant mean in this case. Where I live the testing has changed over the years. Originally they just checked for a PASS code in the EEC. Now they want to see a PASS code plus make sure all the monitors have completed. A 1996 F150 may not have all the monitors this BMW had and if they are looking for that it would be an issue.

That's a good question. Now one of the things I always "assumed" is that when they checked the monitors, they were simply checking that the monitors that were active, were a PASS and "trusted" that the not-applicable monitors actually didn't apply.Paulie wrote: ↑Tue Jul 03, 2018 12:42 pm The other question is what does OBD2 compliant mean in this case. Otherwise, the State's Emissions computers would have to query a database which had a list of all make/year/engine variant combos that ever existed and what I/M monitors were applicable for each.
The only real "deep dive" check I thought they did was verify that the VIN, if available, matched what the Emissions tester entered for the vehicle being tested. But since VIN presence didn't exist until a few years AFTER 1996, it was acceptable for them to not have the VIN, which I doubt a 1996 F150 EEC would.
Is any of that a bad assumption based on knowledge about how State emissions computers really work?

Is it possible to reprogram the ECU and put in the VIN of the beamer?
