Re: 302 to 342, what all needs to change in the tune?
Hi All.
Just thought that 12 months down the track, I would provide an update.
Engine and tune are performing fabulously. My tuning progression not so fabulously. It is ok, just want to know more!
In June, I took the car and myself down the quarter mile for the first time ever. Ran a 14.20 at 100.18 with the car in full street trim @ around 4500 lb. Using this as a tuning experience, found out that it was running quite rich at around 12.0 afr. My first real tune of my own corrected this to around 12.8, but I have not yet run another quarter. Hoping to break into the 13s when I do make it to the strip in the future.
I have also removed the 3.23 ratio diff and installed a 3.45 LSD, which has sharpened up my big girl quite well. Just need to change my speedo gear as unfortunately, when I took the car to a dyno day in October, it hit the speed limiter (112mph) prematurely leaving my power figure short. Rookie mistake as I did not think it would be an issue - my NGVB5 strategy has an AXRATIO scalar which I changed, thinking that would have the ECU covered. I was wrong. Projected power (according to the dyno operator) was around 285 rwhp. Clearly I still have some improvements to make.
Apart from having to replace head gaskets on the motor, it has been performing beautifully.

Re: 302 to 342, what all needs to change in the tune?
Good stuff Stu. Removing the speed limiter in my 'Lane was one of the first things I did, because when it was dynoed in stock form I noticed peak power in 3rd was getting pretty close to the 180kph speed limiter, and when I get the 3.7's I have sitting here installed, next time its dynoed it was going to hit that well before peak power.

Re: 302 to 342, what all needs to change in the tune?
I know this is an old thread, but I need someone's help. Earlier in this thread there are photobucket pictures of the Australian 302 intakes that are unlike anything Ford ever released here in the US. I wanted to send these pictures to someone, but I can't get access to them here at work (network nazis have Photobucket blocked). Can someone save those pictures off to their computer, then upload them as attachments to the forum so I can get at them from here? Thanks...

Re: 302 to 342, what all needs to change in the tune?
While the subject has been brought back up, I have some questions.
That one trumpet with an edge broken off is that done to fit under the cover or was the intake dropped and that broke off?
Where do you get gaskets for an oddball upper/lower like this? Are they readily available or is it a special order part to get the upper/lower plenum gasket. Even if I had one of these intakes, I'm not sure I could ever find gaskets to use it here in the states.
It appears the intake is 3 pieces. The lower, the trumpeted middle that bolts to the lower. Then the upper cover. However what I'm failing to see is how the upper cover bolts to the middle piece. I see there are bolt holes around the perimeter of the middle piece. But I'm not seeing any bolt holes in the upper as it is installed in the engine bay. So I'm just curious if you have any pics of how that works.
But yes, these are great pics. Any others you have, feel free to post them as well. Stuff like this is just fascinating to know about even if it's unlikely I'll ever actually see one in person.

Re: 302 to 342, what all needs to change in the tune?
Studs in the upper, nuts on the middle?
Hasn't any one ever made their own gaskets from a roll of gasket material? Unless there's some crazy o-ring set up, should be doable.

I assume you are referring to the trumpet beside the regulator? That is shaped that way so that the cover can go on.
Ford Australia still stocks these gaskets, but are around $60 - $70 (currencies are about par at the moment), so I decided to make my own gasket - the one that you can see on the lower manifold in the picture above. These manifolds are rare. Tickford only made approximately 750 of these engines (and manifolds), so finding replacements even out here is difficult. I have heard that when they do become available, the sell for around $3K.
You are correct. The manifold is 3 pieces. The lower, the trumpet and the plenum cover. I also made the gasket for the trumpet section to the cover as this was just as expensive from Ford Australia. Once the plenum cover is mounted to the trumpet section, there are about one dozen bolts that bolt from underneath the trumpet into treaded holes in the plenum cover. Here is a picture of the underside of the plenum cover (excuse the oil everywhere, this was from a blown head gasket where I had coolant contaminating the oil): Nothing exciting, but here is the underside of the lower. .
Oh, and unrelated, Tickford reworked the GT40P heads with some larger valves: Cheers

Re: 302 to 342, what all needs to change in the tune?
So, its a cumbersome effort of mounting the middle on the lower. Then running bolts into the upper with the middle mounted down. Thus there better not be something in the way to keep you from getting a wrench on all the bolts that hold the upper plenum on. It certainly makes the setup look nice without bolts visible from above, but it just looks like it'd be cumbersome to work with.
The lower intake looks just like a GT40 lower from the bottom except the ports are obviously opened up as cast where anybody wanting ports that big on a factory GT40 has to do some grinding. The top obviously has the oval ports & no EGR provision so from above, the GT40 and that lower are noticeably different.
The GT40p heads with the 2.02/1.60 valves is something multiple people have done over the years, although the consensus from anybody that has done it is that the ports are the limiting factor, not the valves. So there's little return from the cost of the larger valves and machining work required to get them in. I would hope that as part of the valve increase, they also did some pocket porting.
Otherwise, it's all still fascinating. Thanks for posting those details.
BTW, the other things on the engine appear that it is from the late 90s. What year(s) were these engines made? I'm assuming this one is from 2002 (given your signature).
And what size are those blue injectors? Were they stock or are they upgrades to stock?

Re: 302 to 342, what all needs to change in the tune?
Yes, removing the upper plenum is a right royal pain in the backside - and time consuming. Removal of the bolts is usually with an open end spanner and fingers where you can get them in there.
Correct, no EGR. Not sure what Tickford (Ford Australia's performance partner at the time) did in addition to the heads. I am sure there was some porting work involved.
These engines were modified from the stock 5.0 by Tickford in 2001 and 2002. My car only originally came with a 5.0. I sourced this engine and installed it aftermarket (when this thread started). It was originally assembled for Tickford based Ford Falcons (Common Aussie Passenger Car). Injectors are stock 24lb ones, but on these engines, a higher fuel pressure was implemented. If I recall correctly, the 5.0 ran at 250kpa, these 5.6L were at 300kpa.
I posted this previously, but here is the promo video from back then regarding this engine. 250kw = 340hp

Also, a website of great info for these cars is www.tseries.info When it works, check out the T3 models. Here is another example - www.aufalcon.com.au/bluedriver

One of the above mentioned intake manifolds has just come up on ebay. Starting bid AU$3000! I did report that they where rare.

I get that unusual and rare things are often valuable. I also get that some people will pay handsomely for that uniqueness. But purely from a performance standpoint, there's no justifying that kind of price. Yet there it is...
