Possibly a dead quarterhorse battery?

Post by kx250pilot » Sat Dec 05, 2015 9:38 pm

So tonight I installed that quarterhorse and binary editor.
I got it to were I was working on my idle and had it were I wanted it, then wrote it. After I turned the ignition off, the car restarted but running very low rpm, and rich. Is this what happens when the battery goes dead and you loose the tune?

Usually when the QH looses tunes, the fuel pump runs constantly, you get nothing from the EEC, and when you view the tune names in BE, you see garbage characters that are non-sensical.

And then there's simply measuring the voltage of the coin-cell battery. If it's anywhere near 1.0v, it's bad.

Thanks, the fuel pump does run constantly, but it runs, and everything I read said it wouldn't run.

I guess there's a chance your EEC has a hardware limp mode that will allow it to just barely run the engine, if horribly. That's pretty impressive if it can do that without lucid code to tell the processor how to fire the injectors.

The ignition should fire the plugs even if the EEC isn't commanding. It'll just go to base timing which is the same as if you pull the SPOUT jumper and try to run the engine.

Ok thanks, I'll pull it back out in the morning and check the battery voltage.

the internal hardware will batch fire the injectors on ignition pips if it does not have valid code

it'll run like ass but wont leave you stranded

What algorithm does it use to control InjPW? I'm assuming it would be TPS/RPM related some how.

no its nothing intricate at all, basically the injectors fire on each pip, there might be a cap that fills and varies the time some or some crap like that but its strictly hardware driven

Well you are correct. The battery measured 0.5 v. Should have measured before install since I bought it used. Oh well. Since I'm impatient and have decent electrical repair skills, I decided to fix it myself rather than sending it in. I unsoldered the battery cage from the board and took it to radioshack. They didn't have anything close enough to work so I went thus route. I think a pair of AAAs will have greater capacity as well. I wouldn't recommend this unless you have done a significant amount of solder work before. Edit, it would not let me post pics from my phone. I posted some in the corral. My QH battery just died too. Found this thread while searching around and kx250pilot's link is dead. Here's a new link to his thread:

shoot moates an email and they send one out to you
