Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

Server issues as of late...

Post by Jon 94GT » Tue May 08, 2007 11:14 am

Ok guys, I have been having some hardware issues that began late last week around friday. I am currently building a new machine to host this site on.

Thank you for all that have been patient. I didn't know about the outage till yesterday morning.

I will keep everyone up to date on the current status of the site as things progress.

We were noticing DNS issues as well with the toilsoft.com domain expiring.

Yep that was the initial cause for failure, but that was a quick 30 second fix. DNS issues have been resolved and now there are instability issues related to (i think) the memory or motherboard.

That machine is due for an upgrade so I've decided just to swap it out with a new box i am hopefully going to get to piece together tonight.

Even in it's problematic state, it seemed faster than this machine. Surfing around the forum now seems much slower running on this machine.

I admin a phpBB forum for my company, but there's only internal employees that log into it. It never gets webscraped, or attacked, or anything like that. Point being, it runs on a 2.4GHz machine and it flies. But that's with me sitting with it on a 100baseT network and it has no other duties other than serving up that forum with no more than 2-3 people logged into it...ever. This forum was almost as fast on the previous machine, going over the Internet. But now, it's noticeably slower especially when posting updates to threads.

BTW, while you have the hood up on this forum and the server serving it, you might want to check out the phpBB forums for the error we kept getting a few weeks back about the MySQL table "sessions" getting too full. There's a php fix for this over there. It seems when the webscraping bots like Google and Yahoo come along to cache the pages, they use invalid session IDs that get inadvertently entered into the sessions table and don't get purged before the table gets full. What the code mod does is resizes the table when it gets full. Juse make a search on the phpBB forums for:

SQL Error : 1114 The table 'sessions' is full

You'll find the thread with the code fix AND some further comments about what happened to some people after the fix was implemented and how they had to deal with it.

There's also some good threads about ways to modify the php that catch the auto-registering bots that constantly spam this forum. Thanks to 2Shaker, this isn't as big of an issue for the rest of us anymore, but it's because he is cleaning crap out of the discussions multiple times a day.

BTW, thanks for taking the time to get us back online. We use this site quite a bit and we missed it when it was down.

Yep, I used my lunch break today @ work to run up to the colo and install the new hardware, so that is the reason for the snappier response.

Everything should be good to go, so let me know if anyone sees any problems.

Sorry it took so long guys/gals.

Is it a dedicated server running the site or do you have it Virtual Hosted with other websites using the same webserver?

BTW, navigating around the site goes pretty smoothly, but it seems submitting responses takes a little long. It's not unreasonable, but it is taking an extra few seconds longer than I'd generally expect. I don't know what that's about, but I thought I'd mention it since I noticed it.

And thanks again for taking your lunch break to do that.

When I submitted a response I had to wait longer than usual too. The navigation as chris said is nice, it is just submitting.

I ended up submitting twice because I was not patient. LOL

I'll look into the posting issue as time permits. The site is hosted on its own server. No virtualization is happening on the hardware it runs on. I might end up moving the sql process to its own hardware as well...but I will let you guys know what I do to fix the posting speed issues when it happens.

Jon - could you switch the sessions table from a Heap to MyISAM or increase the row limit on the Heap table? Lastly, a scheduled script to clear out the old sessions would fix this as well.

Let me know if I can help out with anything.

There's a php code patch on the phpBB forum for fixing this. It just needs to be applied to the code that manages the sessions. But yes, doing this at the db level would also be useful. This error is getting quite frequent...

Starting work on updating...new content coming...its been waay too long.

You guys let me know if you see anything critical...

Looks like you simply need a session purge script that cleans up the sessions table every hour (or something like that).
